Why Does the Exhaust Manifold Leak?

Ultimate Auto Repair advises that the exhaust manifold can develop a leak if your engine is running too hot. When the engine is overheating, it can reach a temperature where it will crack the exhaust manifold or the exhaust manifold gasket. When this happens, you will experience the following problems. Do not worry. We can replace the manifold or the gasket if either needs it.

Poor Engine Performance

When the exhaust manifold is leaking, it is releasing exhaust gases into the engine. These gases stuff the engine and make it difficult for combustion to be produced in the combustion chamber. Consequently, you’re going to notice a significant loss of your engine’s performance when you drive your automobile.

Reduced Fuel Economy

As the engine struggles to perform, it will burn through excess fuel. Consequently, you will also notice a reduction in your vehicle’s fuel economy. If you are living on a tight budget, this can create problems because you will need to fill your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s tank more often than normal.

Strange Start-Up Noises

A leaking exhaust manifold or gasket will also make strange noises when you start your automobile. You will either hear hissing coming from the engine or tapping. Listen carefully for these noises if you suspect that you have a cracked exhaust manifold. It’s easiest to hear them at engine start-up.

Rancid Burning Odors

Another problem that you will have is rancid burning odors coming from the engine. In this case, the hot exhaust is melting engine parts. Specifically, the exhaust is hot enough to melt rubber or plastic. It will also overheat the parts made out of metal, and, as such, overheat the engine.

Strong Exhaust Odors

You may also smell exhaust in your vehicle’s cabin. If you do, it is very important that you pull over, cut the engine, and call for a tow truck. Driving your automobile when you can smell exhaust opens you up to the possibility of becoming ill because you are inhaling carbon monoxide.

Check Engine Warning

Finally, the problems discussed above can prompt the engine control unit to turn on the check engine light. This, too, can point to a leaking problem with the exhaust manifold or the manifold gasket. Once we replace the leaking exhaust system part, the check engine light will turn off.
