What Are the Filters in My Automobile?

Your car, truck, or utility vehicle is equipped with three, four, or five filters. It varies between make and model. Ultimate Auto Repair is going to list the different automotive filters below so you know all of them. You can check your owner’s manual to see whether you have a cabin air filter and/or a transmission filter. These two filters are the ones that vary between vehicles. Regardless of how many filters you have, we’d be happy to change them for you when they need it.

Air

All automobiles are equipped with air filters. This filter is located in the engine where it cleans the air that blows in from the outside. The combustion chamber uses this purified air for burning. The air filter needs regular changing, every 12,000 miles or once a year, in order to prevent it from getting clogged. A clogged air filter can affect your engine’s performance and fuel economy.

Cabin

A cabin air filter cleans the air in the passenger cabin. If you don’t have a cabin air filter behind your glovebox, you’ve got permanent netting for the job. If you’ve noticed lately that driving your car makes you sluggish and/or gives you a headache, you likely need the cabin air filter changed. This should be done every 30,000 miles for optimal air purification.

Fuel

The fuel filter purifies the fuel. All gasoline and diesel fuel – even expensive brands – have dirt and sediment in them. The fuel filter removes these contaminants to ensure the fuel is clean when it reaches the combustion chamber. Change the fuel filter every 30,000 miles or two years. A clogged fuel filter can also create performance issues and a reduction in your vehicle’s fuel economy.

Oil

We change the oil filter automatically when we change your vehicle’s oil. This filter removes all of the grime that the oil picks up as it journeys through the engine. It’s important that this grime is removed before the oil recirculates through the engine. Depending on the type of oil you have in your automobile, the oil filter is changed every 3,000 to 10,000 miles.

Transmission

Finally, if your vehicle has a transmission filter, this, too, keeps the transmission fluid clean. You should have your transmission fluid flushed and refilled every 30,000 miles, and we change the transmission filter, too, at that time. This prevents damage to the transmission.
